The spring and early summer are when most cats have litters, and over 70 percent of the kittens end up in shelters. As more kittens crowd the shelters, many older cats are not placed in forever homes.

The cat has now passed by the dog as the favorite pet for most households with more than 82 million cats in North American household versus 76 million dogs. “Unfortunately with the increase in number of cats and kittens, that also means there is a huge increase in unplanned litters,” said Crane. “In fact, over 7 million cats and kittens end up in local shelters or with rescue groups each year–and are looking for a forever home.”
Before adopting a kitten or cat, Crane points out things to consider:
• Healthy Is A Must - make sure you select a healthy cat or kitten, and take it to the vet for a checkup within 7 days of adoption. Keeping your cat indoors, regular checkups and a nutritious diet will be beneficial to the cat or kitten, and you and your family.
• Age: Kitten or Adult- if adopting a younger cat or kitten, make sure you have time to play with it and give it the attention it needs to be a part of your family. Also consider the age of family members as an older cat may not want to live with a home with younger children.
• Single Cat? - if you’re adding a cat or kitten to a multi-cat household, make sure the personalities and ages will mix. If you have one or more older cats, they may not want a young kitten pouncing on them.
• Personality Plus - a kitten will be more outgoing, while an older cat may want to watch the birds, sleep in the sun and be happy snuggled up in your lap. Depending on your personality, your family members and other cats, you need to pick the cat or kitten will fix your household.
• Short vs Long Hair - short-haired cats are easy to groom, while long-haired cats may require more frequent brushings and baths due to potential matting.
